RoadTripping with Claire 005: Argh! Flat Tire – DIY : Compact Spare Tire for my 2018 Honda Clarity!

Welcome to Roadtripping with Claire (RTwC) episode 005! I am at 8100 miles and 4 months of ownership with my Honda Clarity PHEV…. and I got my first flat tire! Glad i have my new compact spare!

I just ordered a Compact Spare Tire a few weeks ago to replace my Full Size Tire ( see video here: https://youtu.be/YAr5E-6aTOw ). Glad I did as I just got flat. It was easier to lug a 30 pound compact than the 50 pound spare. I got it cuz of space saving and weight savings. However, if i was traveling to the desert or remote areas i will probably still take the full size one to drive full speed rather at 40 mph.

The compact spare is from a 2008 Infiniti EX35. It is about 1 inch larger in diameter than the Clarity full-size tire. Using it today it rides fine and has plenty of clearance in the wheel well.

  • Honda Jack Assembly and Tools: https://amzn.to/2TtwQOn
  • D-Anchors (1000 lbs): https://amzn.to/2SWOyEX
  • Toggle Bolts: I used some truck heavy duty 500-1000 lb toggle bolts from another project and heavy duty washers to anchor the D-anchors down. I was not able to find the exact model.
  • Ratcheting Tie Down Straps with Hooks (1,500 lb): https://amzn.to/2EKITfS
  • – a. Full Size – Spare Tire: 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 Coupe Bolt pattern : 5×114.3 with P215/55R17 tire. I had a stock set in my garage from years ago. Otherwise it would have cost about $200 for a third party 17 inch rim and budget touring tire.
  • – b. Compact Spare Tire : Nissan 350Z / Infinity G35 / Infinite EX 35 compact spare The compact spares from Infinity G35 or Nissan 350Z will clear the large brakes on the Clarity. If you google the forums others have went this path. Used on Ebay would have been about $100 to $150. I already have a set of tires and rims and just used what i had. NOTE: The compact spare from my 2007 Accord and 2008 Civic were too small to fit the large Clarity brakes. I will be creating more vlogs and blogs about my experience with I prep and go on road trips with her. RoadTripping with Claire!

RTwC #04: How to check / replace Honda Clarity Engine Air Filter.

RoadTripping with Claire #04: How to replace Honda Clarity Engine Air Filter

I put about 8,000 miles in the past four months. The Honda service reminder finally told me it was past due by one day to bring Claire in for a A01 (oil and filter change and tire rotation). After having it serviced, my Honda dealer told me my air filters needed replacing as they were dirty. Ok… I held off and decided to see for myself at home. So i can make a DIY video on how to open and check the air box filter of the 2018 Honda Clarity. 🙂 My Youtube vlogs may have associated affiliate links to products that I may earn from qualifying purchases.

The air box is on the driver side and is held by two metal clips and two slide in plastic tabs. With the car off, open the hood , unlock the two metal clips, and wiggle and slide the top cover of the air box towards the engine to unhook the two plastic tabs. The Honda Clarity engine air filter part is Part # 17220-5WJ-A01 ( Amazon: https://amzn.to/2D2rOy9 ).

Seeing that my air filter is barely used due to the electric drive, I will change mine out in another 8k to 10 k miles, as hybrid engine is only used 30% of the miles I drive. I cleaned up the air box and picked off some leaves and bugs and replaced the filter back into the box and reversed the process to close up air box.

Overall Claire drives well and is very comfortable for road trips with more than two people. The only disadvantage is the small 7 gallon gas tank. I have to refuel 5 gallons when it hits quarter tanks or about every 170 miles.

I hope this vlog helpful. Stay tuned for more RoadTripping with Claire and other Vlogs and DIY about my 2018 Honda Clarity. RoadTripping with Claire 003: Spare Tire for my 2018 Honda Clarity!

I love taking Claire (my Crimson Red 2018 Honda Clarity) on weekend road trips to places where cell phones may not work. Desert, forests, coasts, and remote lakes. To prep, I need a spare tire and jack kit and it did not come with one, so I added my own FULL SIZED SPARE! You can get a compact one too… see list below. My Youtube vlogs may have associated affiliate links to products that I may earn from qualifying purchases.

Parts list:

  1. Honda Jack Assembly and Tools: https://amzn.to/2TtwQOn
  2. D-Anchors (1000 lbs): https://amzn.to/2SWOyEX
  3. Toggle Bolts: I used some truck heavy duty 500-1000 lb toggle bolts from another project and heavy duty washers to anchor the D-anchors down. I was not able to find the exact model.
  4. Ratcheting Tie Down Straps with Hooks (1,500 lb): https://amzn.to/2EKITfS
  6. – b. Compact Spare Tire : Nissan 350Z / Infinity G35 compact spare The compact spares from Infinity G35 or Nissan 350Z will clear the large brakes on the Clarity. If you google the forums others have went this path. Used on Ebay would have been about $100 to $150. I already have a set of tires and rims and just used what i had. NOTE: The compact spare from my 2007 Accord and 2008 Civic were too small to fit the large Clarity brakes.

I added this spare tire setup and tools after the second month of ownership as I love weekend drives out of town. Does the additional weight 50 – 60 pounds impact my MPG or EV range, probably. I have been getting about 47 mile of EV only range and about 35 to 40 mpg when driving long distances in Hybrid mode. When traveling with two other friends and a full load of camping supplies in the car and trunk, I got about 33 MPG. I still prefer carrying a spare tire and tools with me on my excursions. I will be creating more vlogs and blogs about my experience with I prep and go on road trips with her. RoadTripping with Claire!
