$2,200 HONDA WINDSHIELD CRACK – 2 WEEK BackOrder, REPAIR and CALIBRATION !!!

So a my 2018 had a rock hit the edge of the windshield. Over night the crack grew from one inch to across my windshield to the passenger side. That small crack cost about 2 weeks of driving another car due to a nationwide backorder in Honda windshields and about a total of $2,200 to repair!

Apparently with Honda Sensing and other car safety assist systems with radar and cameras mounted behind the windshield, it requires original Honda glass and Honda dealer calibration after the new glass install. Some glass installers are able to calibrate the camera to new glass but they needed the programming and patterns. According to my auto glass installer and my Honda dealer, the windshield was back-ordered nationwide for Honda Clarity and Accords. I had to drive my other car for about 2 weeks for the parts to arrive. /

Both qoute replacement costs to be about $1500-1700 for the glass and materials, $250 for install, and $250+ for calibration… WOW so its about $2,200 for a new windshield! That was one expensive windshield. I removed my dash cam system and made a quick DIY on how to remove dash came mount ( https://youtu.be/TkvI8Zla6Us ) .

Many new cars have these camera and radar systems installed for safety systems. With this in mind, I hope glass specific to these safety camera systems come down in price in production and installation costs. Imagine a budget Civic or Corollla having to pay a hefty $2000 windshield repair bill…. YIKES!

RTwC #04: How to check / replace Honda Clarity Engine Air Filter.

RoadTripping with Claire #04: How to replace Honda Clarity Engine Air Filter

I put about 8,000 miles in the past four months. The Honda service reminder finally told me it was past due by one day to bring Claire in for a A01 (oil and filter change and tire rotation). After having it serviced, my Honda dealer told me my air filters needed replacing as they were dirty. Ok… I held off and decided to see for myself at home. So i can make a DIY video on how to open and check the air box filter of the 2018 Honda Clarity. 🙂 My Youtube vlogs may have associated affiliate links to products that I may earn from qualifying purchases.

The air box is on the driver side and is held by two metal clips and two slide in plastic tabs. With the car off, open the hood , unlock the two metal clips, and wiggle and slide the top cover of the air box towards the engine to unhook the two plastic tabs. The Honda Clarity engine air filter part is Part # 17220-5WJ-A01 ( Amazon: https://amzn.to/2D2rOy9 ).

Seeing that my air filter is barely used due to the electric drive, I will change mine out in another 8k to 10 k miles, as hybrid engine is only used 30% of the miles I drive. I cleaned up the air box and picked off some leaves and bugs and replaced the filter back into the box and reversed the process to close up air box.

Overall Claire drives well and is very comfortable for road trips with more than two people. The only disadvantage is the small 7 gallon gas tank. I have to refuel 5 gallons when it hits quarter tanks or about every 170 miles.

I hope this vlog helpful. Stay tuned for more RoadTripping with Claire and other Vlogs and DIY about my 2018 Honda Clarity. Road Tripping with Claire – 02: How to Change Infotainment Background and Skin on a 2018 Honda Clarity.

Its been nearly 3 months of ownership and 5,000 miles of owning my Crimson Red 2018 Honda Clarity Plugin Hybrid. I got all weather mats for her ( https://amzn.to/2VIaxBh ) which were great with all the road trips! I decided to call her Claire. I will be creating more vlogs and blogs about my experience with I prep and go on road trips with her. RoadTripping with Claire!

In this blog post, I found out fun feature on the 2018 Honda Clarity infotainment unit: you can customize SKIN of the unit. It essentially changes theme and buttons to larger square buttons and short cuts to quickly access menu items instead of having to drill down a menu.

Over the past 3 months i really dislike the menu system. The HOME, MENU, and Back buttons were too hard to reach for when driving. They were 1/2 inch icons that were hard to quickly press to go to Android Auto. I also hated the lack of a Volume Knob. My 2017 Chevy Volt was much easier to use with big buttons , responsive touch controls, and tactile knobs and push buttons to quickly navigate the infotainment system without distraction. I wanted the same big buttons on my 2018 Honda Clarity.

In order to change your Infotainment skin, press the home button and go to Settings > Change Skin . This will convert your design of your interface from the rectangular monochrome buttons to vivid boxy colorful menu . The new skin made most of the useful categories in a larger easier to reach square box, such as INFO, Audio, Android Auto and settings. You can rearrange each category by pressing and holding the item. I placed mine so Android Auto and INFO were close to the drivers side.

Using the alternate Skin allows the changing of the be colorful background. You can choose between various wall papers already in the system, live wallpapers that interact with your touch, or even upload images for background. To get to this menu, you need to go to Settings > Detailed Information. This will open the Infotainment unit details menu to access image files and other settings. Go to display settings and choose a new wallpaper!

I chose cherry blossoms for my wall paper as I like the cheery attitude that matches the crimson red of my car.
