Honda Clarity: Switching to 17″ Wheels and Tires – Style, Specs, Winter tires, Cost & Weight

Honda Clarity switching from 18 inch to 17 inch wheels:
So if you are looking for winter or aftermarket wheels and tires for your 2018+ Honda Clarity this is the video for you. I have been searching various online tire retailers for 17 inch wheels for my 2018 Honda Clarity for a different look as well as for a second set for winter driving. Btw, my Youtube vlogs and reviews may also have associated affiliate links to products that may earn from qualifying purchases.

For the 2018 Honda Clarity, the original wheel size is 8Jx18 inch rims with +50mm offset and a 5×114.3 bolt pattern. The center bore of the hub is 64.1 mm. The overall tire wheel per tire is 53 lbs. I had my original 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5 – 17 inch OEM ENKEI wheel set in my garage. It has a 7.5Jx17 inch rim with +45mm offset, and 5×114.3 bolt pattern and a 66.1 mm center bore. It fits perfectly with hub – centric spacers with the 64.1mm wheel center bore to Nissan’s 66.1mm ( https://amzn.to/3ivYQtx ). With the 215 / 55 R17 tires and 17 wheel the Nissan Altima wheel and tire weights 48 lbs – (5 lbs lighter than the 18 in. OEM). My coworker has a Tesla Model 3 with 235/45ZR18 98W 8.5Jx18 +40mm offset 5×114.3 that would have fit as well.

The 215 /55 R 17 tires ( https://amzn.to/31MfmQq ) are the same diameter with more side wall. than the OEM Michelin Energy Saver 235 / 45 R 18 tires ( https://amzn.to/3e1JOZd ) . At 3900 miles, I hit a road imperfection and it ruined my sidewall of my Michelin Energy Saver causing it to destroy the tire. I had temporary spare, however i was only able to drive a 50 MPH and the TPMS was alerting. I now carry my full size spare and tools for longer road trips and my compact for everyday driving.

Tire Size Availability:
The local tire shop had one 235 / 45 R 18 sized tire available. It was not a low rolling resistant tire. 215 / 55 r 17 size was more common and with higher selection without special order. This makes it better to use for my road trips.

MPG / EV Range:
The Michelin Energy Saver 235 / 45 R 18 tires ( https://amzn.to/3e1JOZd ) is one of the one of the most efficient LLR tires and gives me about 51 EV miles and 42 MPG for my Clarity. I also have it on my 2017 Chevy Volt. I expect with switching to 17 inch LLR tires, i should get more MPG and EV range with the slightly narrower tires.

COST:
Overall of tire purchases, 17 inch tires are about $30-50 less expensive per tire than 18 inch tires. For winter driving in the snow, BridgeStone Blizzak in for our 18 inch wheels ( https://amzn.to/2YWQ681 ) costs about $50+ more per tire than the 17 inch wheels ( https://amzn.to/2NRMH4a ) . So cost is another reason to switching to 17 inch wheel sets.

I will be driving with this setup for about 500 miles to see if there are more benefits to switching from 18 inch to 17 inch wheels. Tune in later for the results. Otherwise there are other DIY and videos on this channel and playlists about my 2018 Honda Clarity.

[HCV 20] 2018 Honda Clarity – Heater KILLS EV Range ( Quick test – How Much & How Fast?)

Driving the Honda Clarity during the cold Winter season, my EV range drops to about 43 miles of range on a full charge. Normally it about 48 to 50 miles. But how much does the heater burn in terms of EV range per minute. I made a video to find out. Btw, my Youtube vlogs and reviews may also have associated affiliate links to products that may earn from qualifying purchases.

Heater KILLS EV Range – I Experiment on how much how fast?
When owning a 2017 Chevy Volt, I noticed the heater ate 4-5 kwh of energy which running the heater on the traction battery. It didnt take long for the see the range drop. I eventually bought 12 volt heated blanket ( https://amzn.to/377I0KE ) to keep me warm rather than use the HVAC heater core. I bought one for my Chevy Volt along with a heated seat cover ( https://amzn.to/2Sx9sMI ) , as my Chevy did not come with heated seats with I bought it. Both items used less heat than the HVAC heater core.

Unfortunately the 2018 Honda Clarity does not have a EV power use meter for the car. It just have an EV range. So i started testing it based on time and ev range drop.

RESULTS:
Air Conditioning – COLD – Set to coldest level LOW and Max Fan Speed.
With a full charge and A/C on it coldest, the impact to EV range doesnt drop in over a minute.

Air Conditioning – HOT – Set to HIGHEST temperature level and Max Fan Speed.
With the Heater on HI temp max fan speed, my EV range for my Honda Clarity drop 0.3 to 0.4 miles a minute!

With the Heated seats ON and Air Conditioning – HOT – Set to HIGHEST temperature level and Max Fan Speed. My EV range for my Honda Clarity drop 0.4 to 0.5 miles a minute! That means it heated seats only uses about .05 – .1 ev miles a minute.

Perhaps I need a 12 volt heated blanket ( https://amzn.to/377I0KE ) to keep me warm rather than use the HVAC heater core. I bought one for my Chevy Volt along with a heated seat cover ( https://amzn.to/2Sx9sMI ) , as my Chevy did not come with heated seats with I bought it.

I hope you found this experiment video useful. Stay tuned for a future update!

[HCV 19] Honda Clarity: Windshield Wiper Blade Performance FIX: Replacing VS Cleaning.

So many Honda Clarity owners has complained about bad windshield wiper performance. Its either bad wiper blades or it needs cleaning. I have been using Rain X (https://amzn.to/2vKe9Lv )since I bought my 2018 Honda Clarity and never noticed it until my last week when it rained. And the Rain X, wore off. Rather than applying another coat for the season, i wanted to fix the wiper performance issue. Of my 3 Hondas and Chevy Volt, the Honda Clarity was the only one with this issue.

To find out if its the wiper blade or the design. I cleaned both wipers with rubbing alcohol and rinsed them off. For control, I left the original passenger side Honda wipers on. I replaced my driver side wiper blade with a new Michelin Guardian wiper blade 26 inch ( https://amzn.to/2UjgaIy ) i got from Costco during a sale a few months ago.

I cleaned the exterior of the windshield with rubbing alcohol 50% (https://amzn.to/2GMBQoq ) on a microfiber cloth ( https://amzn.to/3b6Qp4q ) to remove any grease or residue. I could have just applied more Rain X but that would not have solved the problem any more.

Results:
After driving through wet fog and using the windshield wipers the driver side was clearer with out marring. We will need to see how long the blades last. It seems like the Honda wiper arms are applying enough pressure but the rubber may be leaving a residue. So the cleaning with rubbing Alcohol may just fix this, but having a pair of replacement wipers help.

My 2017 Chevy Volt uses the same wiper blades for over 3 years now and its been great. Even with the pressure against the window. So perhaps the Honda Clarity got some bad rubber. I dont know.

For the windshield fluid reservoir, its small so i carry a bottle of distilled water with me in case i run out of wiper fluid.

Stay tuned for a future update!
