Chevy Volt Vlog #61: @ 40,000 miles – 27.5 MPG – Oil 7% – Solar Panels

Chevy Volt Vlog #61: Its about 40,000 miles @ about 21 months with my 2017 Chevy Volt. For my long distant trips 700+ miles i use HOLD mode and get about 27.5 MPG. My oil level is good and will need to replaced in a couple of weeks as its about 5% now.  This will be my 3rd oil change for my Volt.

I will be changing it out with 4.2 quarts of Mobil 1 – 0w-20 (http://amzn.to/2CX5xPl)  instead of the recommended 5w-20 as i prefer lighter weight oil in my cars with 5w-20 motors.  I will also be changing out the oil filter the links are below for the PF64 filter thats about $6.50 at Walmart or Amazon – http://amzn.to/2FPL3uZ –

In the past month my proximity remote was low power and i had to replace the CR2032 battery. Here is the DIY: https://sterlingwong.com/2018/02/17/diy-how-to-replace-battery-on-a-chevy-gm-car-remote-keyless-entry/

I also tried using a 80 watt solar panel on my Volts windshield, which was a good idea, however I did not want to risk ruining my $300 12-volt AGM battery in my trunk. I did not know if the charge controller knew how to charge a AGM cell.  So i put it in my GMC Savanna Van to charge its 12 volt battery.

For the audio system of the 2017 Volt, I wanted to play cassette tapes i had from my 90’s so  i found my Sony Walkman and Sony DiscMan and found out the belts were bad, so i bought a cassette player from Walmart. The AC inverter was not clean so there was a LOT of static and noise. I eventually got a Cassette to MP3 converter that used USB power and it worked!

I also found my old Transcend MP3 Player from 8 years ago! and it works like a USB drive for the Chevy Volt audio system. The infotainment system is able to control the tracks from the dash display, the audio controls, and the steering wheel controls which make it very convenient when driving!   Transcend still sell mp3 players with radios:  http://amzn.to/2oEfzk6

Lastly, I have test drove the 2018 Honda Clarity plugin and the 2018 Honda Accord 1.5 Turbo and love them.  I like how they have air deflector vents in the front wheel well for better aerodynamics.  I also test drove the Kia Niro Hybrid (49 MPG) and was not really satisfied with the pickup speed or mpg (30 mpg on my test drive )  performance. It was also smaller than expected in cargo space.

Coming up will be DIY on 2017 Chevy Volt Oil Change, so stayed tuned!!!!

DIY: How to Replace battery on a Chevy GM Car Remote

My Chevy Proximity car remote lasted about 20 months before running low on power and the proximity sensor did not open the doors immediately nor did it sense it after entering the car. You need to put the remote on the center storage bin at the designated spot  in order to power on the car and drive it. I drove it to Ikea and got new CR2032 batteries and switched it on the spot.  I will keep a spare in my car incase it runs out of energy but may buy a Maxell or Energizer cells http://amzn.to/2HnnKca .

Chevy Volt Vlog: Remote Not Detected – 38k miles 20 Months

Wow its been a total of 20 months and 38k miles of ownership!  My car remote FOB was running low on power and the proximity sensor did not open the doors immediately nor did it sense it after entering the car. I will post a how to video later on the Chevy Volt Vlog playlist.  Overall the car is good, I am looking at a Honda Clarity Plugin or Kia Niro Plugin as my next car so it should be fun test driving those cars.
