UNBOX | REVIEW: ZHUOSHENG – Wireless Lavalier Microphone for Smart phones – $130

I needed a wireless mic setup for my vlogging setup, so I bought this ZHUOSHENG – Wireless Lavalier Microphone for Smart phones ( https://amzn.to/32bQL6P ) for about $130.

For vloggers who want cleaner wireless mic audio using a smart phone this is a pretty good solution. I bought this because I have been using my Samsung S8 ( https://amzn.to/34ScORN ) smart phone (with a TRRS headphone jack) for vlogging and wanted a wireless mic system so I am not tethered by a microphone cord or limited by my phones microphone. You will need a TRRS to TRS audio adapter (https://amzn.to/34Szst8 ) to use this with audio recorders or DSLR cameras.

PROS:
– Wireless microphone system for smartphones with holder.
– Good audio pickup from mic with little or no noise ( check out my video with audio sample)
– 5 hour battery run time and charges by USB
– Has monitor and audio out to test and monitor audio (good if you you want to check audio.)

CONS:
– Design not really good for using on DSLR cameras as its bulky and vertical.
– It has a TRRS cable out put for smartphones – for DSLR cameras for vloggers you will need a 3.5mm TRRS (female) to TRS (male) adapter (https://amzn.to/34Szst8 ) in order to feed audio to your camera or laptop application.
– For newer smartphones without headphone jacks, you will need an adaptor.
– For my smartphone to see it as “external mic” , I needed to put the TRRS cable into the camera first, then plug in the other end to the Receiver unit.
– Unknown quality – follow up review later in a few months (maybe).

If you plan to continue to just use a smartphone to vlog this would be a great tool. If you plan to do DSLR camera work with wireless mics, this will work but you will need adaptors. Or get something more compact.

Insta360 One R – My $60 Wireless Mic Audio Setup for Vlogging.

I bought my Insta360 One R ( https://amzn.to/3jGcKt5 ) a flew months ago and needed to go wireless so here is my wireless for Vlogging – about $60!

I bought Insta360 Audio adapter ( https://amzn.to/3250CLz ) that allows for TRS audio for the Insta360 One R was about $10. The wireless headset lavalier microphone transmitter and receiver ( https://amzn.to/2TLwL6y ) was $45 on sale on Prime Day this year. The microphone set came with a transmitter and receiver and 3 microphones. You will still need a mount the receiver close to the camera, i was using gaffers tape ( https://amzn.to/3jOkJ6S ) until I bought an aluminum hard case ( https://amzn.to/3jSinUl ) for with cold shoe mounts for my Insta360.

Overall a simple setup. The receiver is small enough to hid between the 360 cameras blend “invisible zone” . The only draw back is the included mics of the system are weak cardioid microphones. So the volume is low for the mics unless you have them set at max volume and within 4 inches of your voice direction. While it works, a powered omni directional microphone would be better for this. I tested it with the original mics and the omni and it clearly sounds better with the omni mic.

Costco Type S 12v Jump Starter (8,000 mAh Power Bank – USB C) $49 UNBOXING

Costco has a new Type S 12v Jump Starter for $49 (on sale, normally $59). Its also a 8,000 mAh Power Bank with USB C and USB A connections for 2.4A charging. There are other 12v jump starters and larger power bank combos online: https://amzn.to/2JlQ44d .

I bought this Type S Jump Starter to replace my 2016 WinPlus Jumpstarter was starting to lose charge. I guess the lifespan for these are about 4 years for replacement. At $49 it was a good deal and my 2016 version saved me several times during various roadtrips and at work when a co-worker needed a jump.

The new features of this 2020 Type S 12 volt jump starter was the IP64 water resistance, the digital display instructions on the side of the device, and the USB C (input and output) which is my typical standard charging plug for most of my devices. It does come with a 12v USB car charger and a micro USB charge cable. The USB fast charging at 2.4a is a good feature. The primary use of this will still be as a car jumper, as travel a lot on the road during the weekend and for road trips.

Per the instructions, it needs to be over 50% charged in order to jump a car and it needs to be charged every 2-3 months to keep the battery life. So I the unit was made in June 2020 (100%) and now its October 2020 with 60% charge, so it basically lost 10% a month or perhaps it was only 80% charged after being built. Any ways, I normally charge every 1-2 month so this should last me another 4 years.
