Mastering My Household Tech: The Redragon S101 at Home

My Redragon S101 keyboard and mouse have become indispensable for managing my smart home and media center. I’ve found so many creative ways to use their programmable features to streamline my household tech interactions. For example, I’ve programmed some of the keyboard’s macro keys to instantly launch my streaming services – one key for Netflix, another for YouTube, and a third for my smart home control app. It’s so much faster than navigating through menus with a remote or clicking through desktop icons.

The mouse’s programmable buttons are equally handy. I’ve assigned one of its side buttons to mute/unmute my smart speaker, so I can quickly cut off the music when someone calls without fumbling for my phone or yelling across the room. Another button is programmed to open my digital recipe book application, which is a lifesaver when my hands are messy in the kitchen. It’s truly amazing how these little shortcuts add up to significant time savings and a smoother tech experience at home.

Beyond controlling smart devices, I even use the Redragon S101 keyboard for managing my media files. I’ve set up macros for common file operations like “copy to external drive” or “move to archives” for my photo and video collection. This eliminates repetitive clicking and dragging, especially when I’m organizing large batches of files after a family event. The comfortable wrist rest on the keyboard also makes these longer organizing sessions much more bearable.

The Redragon S101 keyboard RGB backlighting, while initially just for aesthetics, has become surprisingly practical. I’ve set different lighting profiles for different home activities. For instance, when I’m in “movie mode,” the keyboard glows a soft blue, and when I’m just casually Browse, it’s a calm green. It’s a subtle but effective way to visually confirm which “profile” I’m currently using, especially when I’m using those customized macro keys.

In short, my Redragon S101 combo has transcended its gaming origins to become a true command center for my connected home. Adding Ambient Accent Mood Lighting – RGB LED Strip Tape Light -50 ft ( iVAOOZE ) $38 – UNBOX | REVIEW

The 50 feet 12volt RGB led lighting strip is powered by large AC adapter. There are 3 rolls of 16 feet led lighting which can be chained together. It is controlled by a small controller and power splitter that has microphone for lighting effects that changes with music beats.

The controller also saves the last programmed function and settings. You can program it with the IR remote or with the app on a smart phone via Bluetooth. I programmed mine to be scheduled to run during night hours with an amber white light glow for my couch. I experimented with adding it to my stairway handles and closet.

After programming, I no longer needed the application on my phone and removed it. The controller still can get signals from the IR remote when its ON. For my controller, when its set to be scheduled to a certain time, it SOMETIMES locks out the IR remote.

This can be good and bad. The good is that no one can change it later and mess up your settings. The bad I will need to use the smartphone app to change the program. and it was not consistent with the IR remote control override lock out.

PROS:

  • Easy setup with 3 rolls of 16 ft RGB LED lighting.
  • Can be daisy chained
  • Good mood ambient lighting
  • AC powered
  • IR remote control has many control options ( timed on/off, lighting color and fade effects, light levels, and music beat effects.
  • Advanced programming can be done via Bluetooth with their smart phone App: Scheduled on / off time, RGB light levels and settings, music beat control from phone, via APP. Once programmed the controller keeps the setting.

CONS:

  • Only one programable controller in package ( You will need to buy another kit if you want light in a different room grouping).
  • No IR remote reset button for advanced programming – you need to use their app to update.
  • Inconsistent override with IR remote.

Overall this kit is fun and simple to experiment with and has potential for future DIY projects by cutting up and soldering the cable later. If you are planning to make a whole room or area one lighting setting this will work. If you want to add different colors and lighting scenes, you will need multiple kits or more advanced kits with different scenes.
