About a week ago, my Uniden Radar detector ( https://amzn.to/3HrCaGK ) power cord which uses a RJ11 connector broke off. I used Loctite FUN-TAK Mounting Putty ( https://amzn.to/3qnzy5N ) for temporary fixes for my plastic parts such as to hold connectors together, such as for my RJ11 connector with a missing tab. It held the connector in place for about 3 days without issue and was easy to remove.

Its time to remove the temporary fix and replace the broken RJ11 telephone connector ( https://amzn.to/3zaQmAK ) for my radar detector.
My trusty crimp tool ( https://amzn.to/3Huow5H ) does both RJ45 / RJ11 connectors and i have been using it to fix network plugs as well.

For RJ11 jacks have 4 pin connectors and is pretty simple to figure out.
Just write down the order of the color cable or take a photo for reference.
I use the crimper tools sharp cutters to score the housing and cut the ends off for a straight even cut of the wires. It comes out aligned and ready. Just pull off the scored cable housing and sort the colored wires.

Slide the wires into the new connector plug and crimp using the crimping tool to seat all the wires. Overall it only takes about 20-30 seconds. The most important part is checking the wire color order. Lastly check the cable to make sure it works .Now my Uniden Radar detector ( https://amzn.to/3HrCaGK ) and it powers up!

Overall its good to know how to fix and replace broken RJ11 and RJ45 connectors for many applications for the home or car repair as many cables now use for data and power connections.

How To Repair: Car 12 Volt Power Cable BLOWN FUSES ( Automotive )

Many car accessory devices such as radar detectors, USB car chargers, and other 12 volt automotive devices uses inline Fast-Blow Glass Fuses ( https://amzn.to/3FyrAgS ). This video shows you how to repair and replace them Fast-Blow Glass Fuses.

Stuff in this video:

My radar detector failed to turn on a few days ago. After checking all the connections I realized the 12 volt power cable’s inline fuse was blown. Replacing the fuse is easy. The hardest part is reading the fuse type from the small cap of the blown fuse.

I bought a Fast-Blow Glass Fuses Assortment Kit ( https://amzn.to/3ByCCQJ ) which had the fuse i needed to replace. A kit like this will last me 5 years or more as i have many 12 volt devices and accessories in my car or home appliances with these fuse in the appliance. They are common in 30 mm and 20 mm length.

Replacement is very easy, Simply remove the power cable, unscrew the top cap. Read the type and size of the fuse. Replace with exactly the same glass fuse. Put back together. Test. Recycle to blown fuse according to local disposal regulations.

Overall knowing how to repair and replace fuses is very useful and can save you from buying a new appliance. I normally get a blown fuse from an appliance every 2- 3 years, so having a fuse kit is very convenient if you are a home owner or car owner.

CHEVY VOLT VLOG #75 – OIL PAN GASKET LEAK and Replacement

Chevy Volt Oil Pan Leak and Replacement

My 2017 Chevy Volt is now about 95,000 miles now. It has been burning oil for several months. It has been very slow due to the low use of the internal combustion engine. In the past several months, I noticed the oil level dropped about one quart every 3 weeks. It soon grew to losing about one quart every week before I noticed an oil spot on my driveway. I also noticed a burning oil smell.

The oil filter and drain plug were tight and not leaking. The Chevy Volt’s underbody fiber panels ABSORBED several quarts of the oil before the speed of the moving car drifted oil to the exhaust pipes causing the burning oil smell.

Since only about half of the 2017 Chevy Volt mileage is with gas, and the rest has been electric motor, the engine probably only has about 45,000 to 50,000 gas miles on it.

Searching the internet, it seems like some 2016 and 2017 Chevy Volt has an oil pan gasket leak early in its production. So it may be the build and the gasket material. Also from the forums, users noted that the Volt needed several days to fix and may cost anywhere from $800-$1600 out of warranty to repair. The reason for several days to fix was due to the gasket material curing or clients returning back to the dealer when it leaked again after the repair.

After doing my research – I decided to do it myself :

  1. I didn’t want to spend $1000 or more in repair costs, car rental, and lost time. I figured it take me about 3 hours of actual work and 1 day of waiting for the gasket to cure. And about $40 for a new oil pan hardware , $5 for RTV Silicone Permatex Ultra Black gasket maker, $5 oil filter , and $12 for 0w-20 synthetic oil . The panels were soaked in oil and not sure what the dealer may do or charge me to clean, so I got $12 gallon bottle of degreaser solution, and $6 two cans of Carb cleaner . Total cost about $80 in materials and 3 hours or so in labor.
  2. Oil pan replacement generally is pretty simple, and I wanted to make sure the gasket had time to cure and that I was able to clean off all the oil spray on the exhaust pipes and under panels.
