How to REPLACE / MODIFY Dahon Speed D7 / Mariner Rack Bungee Luggage Strap ($3)

This video is how to replace the strap of the original Dahon rear cargo rack bungee luggage strap. My original Dahon luggage strap lasted about 2 months before it lost it elasticity. The Dahon OEM strap costs about $12-$15 from Dahon or resellers. I never bought a new one and just tied it to my rack for over 12 years and just used grocery panniers ( https://amzn.to/3lCu56O ) and bicycle trunks ( https://amzn.to/3nFxx2n) .

My 2008 and 2009 Dahon Speed D7, and Dahon Mariner D7 ( https://amzn.to/30Wo8d9 ), are 20 inch wheel folding bikes that came with a rear carry rack and a unique Dahon bungee flat luggage strap with a rack specific anchors. I have bought generic flat bungee cords to replace old stretched straps ( https://amzn.to/3lzosq5 ) over the year, however didn’t want the original anchors lost so I decided to replace the broken strap.

You can use customize and personalize your own strap with your own color by replacing the strap. I saw HDX 48 inch flat bungee cords in green at Home Depot for under $3. It is too short for a 3 strap design of the original. Its enough to make a two strap version. For 3 strap design, you will need at least 72+ inches of flat bungee cord. If the new cord has ends you will need to remove or cut them off with a pair a scissors.

You need to remove the both Dahon strap anchor covers. Pull out the end of the bungee cord with the end clip. Use long nose pliers (https://amzn.to/36U8vXm ) to loosen the clip. You will need to reuse the clips. Run the new 48 inch through the two side holes on the original clip. If you have a 24 inch flat bungee cord you can alternatively make a 1 strap replacement through the center hole. If you can find a 72 in bungee cord you can string it like the original. You will need a large pair of pliers to clamp the clip back on the new bungee cord ends. I use a Channel Lock Groove Joint pliers ( https://amzn.to/30VRgBf ) . make sure the length of the new cords are equal length. Replace the anchor covers. Test on your Dahon rack. Done!
