How To: BACKUP WORK FLOW – Using External Hard Drives.

They are not fast enough for video editing but perfect for storage of archived data. I am going to show you how I backup all my data using external hard drives. I buy a new external desktop hard drive every 2 years to duplicate all my data.

A few days ago I bought a Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8 TB External Hard Drive ( https://amzn.to/2OGva2K ) at Costco. This is a very large external hard drive with USB A ports in the front of the drive. This is good for charging your phone or to use other USB devices.

I use the large external desktop drives as long term storage. I typically buy twice the capacity every year and copy ALL of my data from prior hard drive to the new drive. That way all my data is backup. Then older drive are placed into storage. If an emergency were to happen, the largest drive well be easy to take and save rather than multiple smaller drives.

They are not fast enough for video editing but perfect for storage of archived data.I needed to clear out hard drive space on my MSI GE75 Gaming laptop ( https://amzn.to/326XfDJ ) that i use for video editing. I normally carry a Crucial 1 TB SSD drive ( https://amzn.to/327rABM ) to quickly transport and backup video and footage to and from my laptop.

The Crucial X6 SSD ( https://amzn.to/327rABM ) transfers about 500 megabytes a second. However, for longer term backups of footage, using a traditional mechanical external hard drive is more cost effective. SSD drives transfers 5 times faster than traditional drives but costs at least 5 times as much has of this 2021. The cost is the reason why I also have a portable mechanical hard drive.

I have a few Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8 TB External Hard Drive ( https://amzn.to/2OGva2K ) external desktop hard drives to backup my laptop. In the video it transfers at about 68 to 160 megabytes a second which is fast for a mechanical hard drive. So my typical 300 megabyte video clips and footage takes about 3 seconds to backup. So it is worth it to carry both SSD and HDD when working remotely from home.

This drive uses the same single USB 3,0 cable as my other Seagate external hard drives. I like the consistency of cables and power supplies as backup. I works with my Seagate One Touch USB 3.0 portable hard drives ( https://amzn.to/3uDxw5b ). The case is lightweight and made of plastic. Since it is a traditional mechanical drive, you need to be careful not to place it next to magnetic fields.

This is why i only bring my SSD drive with me when traveling away from home or office. Crucial X6 SSD ( https://amzn.to/327rABM ) is not magnetic and has no moving parts. I usually keep my Seagate desktop drives at the office or work site only.

Lastly, the Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8 TB External Hard Drive ( https://amzn.to/2OGva2K ) is warranted for 2 years, so I typically buy a new one drive that is double the size of my previous drive to backup my all my data on to my new hard drive. I normally backup all my new content and data at the end of the month.
