Water Bottle Backup: My LifeStraw on the Local Trails

Living here near Los Angeles, we’ve got some decent hiking spots within a short drive. Used to be, I’d load up a heavy hydration bladder even for a quick few-hour trek. One time on a 9 hour hike I got lost and ran out of water. Then I started thinking, “There’s gotta be a backup for next time i run out of water.” That’s where the LifeStraw Personal Water Filter came in. Now, I just carry a medium water bottle and the Lifestraw, knowing I can refill it from a stream or even a less-than-crystal-clear natural water source if I have to.

The real beauty of this LifeStraw on the trail is the weight and space savings. It can freeing up room in my pack for snacks and other essentials. When I come across a clean running water source and if i am out of bottled water, I just use the LifeStraw in, and drink straight from it like a straw. It’s that simple.

The peace of mind knowing it removes 99.99% of Waterborne Bacteria (Including E. Coli and Salmonella), and 99.99% of Waterborne Parasites (Including Giardia and Cryptosporidium) is huge. You see water in nature, but you never really know what’s lurking in it. The LifeStraw takes that worry off my mind. Plus, it even Removes Microplastics, which is something you don’t often think about but is definitely a bonus these days.

I haven’t had any issues with clogging or slow flow rates on my longer hikes. The LifeStraw water tastes clean, with no weird aftertaste.

For anyone who does day hikes around here and is tired of carrying a ton of water, the LifeStraw is a good option. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and gives you access to a whole lot more hydration options.

Tough Jobs, No Problem: My Scrub Daddy in the Garage

When I first considered using my Scrub Daddy Color Sponges in the garage, I was a bit skeptical. The garage is where the real tough, greasy, grimy jobs happen – oil, dirt, mud. I’ve found some truly creative uses for it out here. It’s fantastic for cleaning garden tools after a day in the dirt – the firm texture scrapes off caked-on mud without damaging the metal. For my car, it’s become my go-to for scrubbing wheel rims. It gets into all the nooks and crannies of the spokes, and its scratch-free nature means I don’t have to worry about marring my alloy wheels.

For greasy messes, like spills on my workbench or grimy tools, the Scrub Daddy works wonders. I pair it with a degreaser, and the firm texture provides the necessary friction to break down grease and lift it away. Unlike abrasive pads, it doesn’t leave behind tiny scratches on my tools or surfaces, which is a huge plus for maintaining my equipment.
